According to a Boston Globe report, Logan International Airport will soon feature solar trees as part of a $55.7 million parking garage renovation plan. Solar trees are an increasingly popular design technique that takes advantage of large open spaces like parking lots to generate clean energy from mounted photovoltaic panels.
The newspaper notes that along with 16 planned solar trees, the renovation project will feature other environmentally friendly benefits like energy efficient LED lighting and a rainwater irrigation system, while reducing the airport's overall carbon dioxide emissions by about 1,350 metric tons.
This isn't the only recent advance in solar energy around Massachusetts, which has set goals to generate more clean energy in the coming years. A report on GreentechMedia.com notes that the Massachusetts company BigBelly, which provides solar energy powered trash receptacles, recently raised $3.2 million to expand its business activities.
The company, which has 22 employees, has reportedly distributed about 2,500 of its trash receptacles around the world.
