A report in the Orlando Sentinel describes how the Orange County Convention Center now boasts a $7 million solar roof array comprised of thousands of three-by-five feet photovoltaic panels. The system is said to generate one megawatt of electricity and is among the larger projects of its kind in the country.
The Sentinel noted that Orlando Mayor Rich Crotty turned on a ceremonial switch to launch the newly eco-friendly facility.
Also cited in the report were a handful of other solar energy projects that have helped make Florida the number two producer in the nation, including an 11 megawatt facility that will provide power in the vicinity of Kennedy Space Center and a project in Orland that could generate up to 10 megawatts of electricity.
Another high-profile project in Florida has been a plan to construct one of the nation's largest photovoltaic solar energy plants.
