According to an announcement by the city, the first of 1,100 transit shelters were recently unveiled, with an eye on replacing all of the city's existing ones. The new bus stop shelters are said to be the result of a two-year design and fabrication process.
"San Franciscans who are waiting for their bus or streetcar to arrive will be pleasantly surprised when they see the new transit shelters we're putting in across the City," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. Newsom was on hand at the official unveiling ceremony in late May.
According to the mayor, the shelters will use photovoltaic panels, LED lighting and offer WiFi capabilities. The technology used to produce the energy for the shelters is said to be third-generation organic-dye-based solar film.
Keeping with the theme of environmental sustainability, the city also noted in its announcement that more than half of its bus fleet is comprised of zero-emission vehicles.
