The funds, a mix of loans and grants, come from the state's $650 million Alternative Energy Investment Fund.
One grant, for $113,000, will go to Chatham University for the installation of solar thermal systems on two of its residence halls. The university is paying half of the project's cost.
Another grant will pay about a quarter of the cost of a solar panel installation at Johnson & Johnson's manufacturing plant in East Lampeter Township. The AEIF grant provides $876,000 and the company will provide the remaining $2.4 million.
And Lehigh Valley Hospital's $1.9 million rooftop solar energy project is receiving a state grant for $96,120.
Two school districts are receiving grants or loans for geothermal heating and cooling systems. The first, a grant of $237,423, goes to Parkland School District in Upper Macungie Township; the second is a loan for $111,882 to East Lycoming School District.
Governor Rendell said he is "committed to supporting growth and innovation that promotes energy conservation and efficiency, a cleaner environment, and a stronger green economy."
