Solar energy collective lowers entry costs for L.A. homeowners

Los Angeles homeowners considering a solar energy system can take advantage of a solar buying program that reduces per-watt costs by 23 percent.

One Block Off the Grid (1BOG), a solar power collective, is offering a group discount on new solar installations to L.A. homeowners between now and March 9, 2010. The collective negotiates for lower costs on solar projects; it has partnered with installer SunWize to perform new installations in the Los Angeles area.

In addition, 1BOG says, it has an Online Estimate Tool that can help homeowners assess the costs and benefits of a solar power installation. The tool takes into account the cost of the systems available and the angle of a homeowner's roof to estimate his savings from going solar.

Because 1BOG's collective gains bargaining power as it increases in size, the company is offering $100 incentives to members that will increase by $10 for every new member who installs a solar array.

L.A. homeowners can install solar energy for $5.56 per watt by joining 1BOG. Collective members can get "great discounts and added benefits that increase as the solar community grows," said Dave Llorens, 1BOG cofounder.
