Massachusetts project sources solar panels locally

Posted 2 years ago in the Solar Business category by Nate Lew
A massive retail and entertainment complex west of Boston is installing solar panels made by a Massachusetts company.

The company, Evergreen Solar, is based in Marlborough. It operates a solar panel plant in Devens, a town in central Massachusetts. The entertainment complex in Foxborough, called Patriot Place, is adjacent to Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots.

Patriot Place, which is being constructed piece by piece, will offer shopping and dining options in its 1.3 million square feet. It will have a movie theater, a hotel, a hospital and a museum dedicated to the Patriots' history.

Over 2,800 Evergreen solar panels will be installed at Patriot Place, enough to provide 30 percent of the site's electricity needs. The panels will generate enough clean energy to offset 8,800 metric tons of carbon each year - the equivalent of taking 1,600 cars off the road, Evergreen says.

"We're … proud to work with a local company like Evergreen Solar on such an important project," noted Patriot Place general manager Brian Earley. But Evergreen won't be solely Massachusetts-based for much longer. In a nod to cost pressures, it's moving much of its solar panel assembly to China in mid-2010.

Solar panel prices fell 30 percent since the Devens plant opened in mid-2008, Evergreen explained last month.
