An agreement has been reached between William Paterson University, Nautilus Solar Power, and SunDurance Energy to construct the largest solar energy facility at a university in the U.S.

The project, which will include the installation of solar energy projects on the rooftop and parking lot of the Wayne, New Jersey university campus, will initially aim to generate three megawatts of solar power with the completion of its first phase this summer.

The second part of the project, which will add another 500 kilowatts to bring the power generated by the facility to 3.5 megawatts, is currently scheduled to go online sometime in 2011.

SunDurance, a New Jersey-based solar system installer, will design and construct the project, which will be funded and operated by Nautilus Solar.

"The project will contribute to a reduction of air pollution and improve the air quality in New Jersey, while creating green jobs in the region. We are looking forward to installing similar solar facilities at other schools and universities," said Laura Stern, President of Nautilus Solar.

In total, the solar power system is projected to cut the university's spending on energy by $4.3 million over the 15-year Purchase Power Agreement it will sign with Nautilus Solar.
