Harvard University completes construction of solar power system

Posted 2 years ago in the Solar Policy category by Nate Lew
Harvard University has announced the completion of its first large rooftop solar power system, which had been in the works for most of the last year.

The system, which is comprised of SunPower T5 Solar Roof tiles, was installed by solar power developer CarbonFree Technology and was designed along with the help of SunPower, a San Jose-based solar technology company.

In total, the 500-kilowatt system will generate enough energy to power 83 homes per year while also offsetting 367 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The system was installed on top of the University's Arsenal on the Charles complex in Watertown, Massachusetts, a historic building that had previously served as a military installation before its purchase by Harvard in 2001.

"We are delighted and honored to help Harvard deliver on its commitment towards achieving its meaningful environmental and energy goals," said Joel Jansen, managing director of energy assets for Integrys Energy Services, Inc. "The leadership demonstrated by Harvard on this project should serve as a model, inspiring others to take an active role in protecting the environment and managing their energy."

Crimson Solar - a subsidiary of Integrys Energy Services, will own the solar power system. Harvard has already committed to buying power from the system at a pre-determined rate for the next 25 years.
