JA Solar exec sees solar energy growth in 2010

An executive for a Chinese solar energy company is predicting that demand for sun-fueled power will rebound in the new decade as worldwide interest in the technology continues to grow.

Ming Yang, the vice president of business development for JA Solar Holdings, told a New York news conference this week that he expected the global market for solar power to grow at "a 30 percent per year clip over the next two to three years," Reuters reported.

Already, he said that overseas sales had been on the rise, and could jump by as much as 50 percent by the end of the year.

The demand that he expects to see for JA Solar, which produces low-cost silicon cells that convert sunlight into electricity, will come from a rebound from the a tough 2009 that saw the market for solar energy dry up financing for new products was nowhere to be seen.

Additionally Yang said he expected to see prices begin to drop for solar cells by a "low single-digit" percentage point in Q1 2010.

Perhaps in anticipation of increased sales in the new year, JA Solar announced in December 2009 that it had approved a share repurchase program to demonstrate their "financial strength and long-term growth opportunities."
