During an event last week in Los Angeles hosted by the EPA, Aerojet and Solar Power announced they would be partnering up to help streamline the development process of almost 15 million acres of EPA-tracked land for potential renewable energy production projects.
The two companies were chosen to work on the project because of their previous work on a 40-acre photovoltaic solar farm at an Aerojet site in Sacramento that had been designed by Solar Power to provide energy to Aerojets operations.
The Sacramento solar farm is comprised of a 3.6 megawatt system initially that will be expanded to 6 megawatts after a phase-2 addition. Following the addition, the project which uses tracking systems to allow solar panels to follow the sun throughout the day will be the largest single-site industrial system in California.
"Designing and delivering a system of this scale, while restoring this land to beneficial use continues to be a rewarding experience. said Eric Hafter, CSO of Solar Power. Helping Aerojet achieve key economic, environmental and sustainability objectives demonstrates the social and economic value of our products and services."
Ronald Samborsky, Aerojets vice president of renewable energy and sustainability, added that the 6 megawatt project provided 20 percent of the power to the companys groundwater remediation program while significantly reducing their carbon footprint.
