The second largest exhibition complex in Belgium has reached a deal with a U.S. rooftop photovoltaic solar panel producer to install solar power membranes to produce nearly 2 megawatts to power the structure.

Energy Conversion Devices Inc. has been tapped by the Flanders Expo in Ghent, Belgium to install the solar power system, which will generate 1.87 megawatts of solar power for the structure.

The system will utilize ECD's Uni-Solar photovoltaic laminates along with a durable roofing membrane to capture sunlight from the roof of the structure, which ranks as the 40th largest exhibition complex on earth.

"The Flanders Expo installation is an excellent example of how we work with our channel partners to develop BIPV solutions for our customers," said Mark Morelli, ECD's president and CEO. "We are very pleased with the final project, and the fact that the Flanders Expo installation is expected to produce 1.5 million kWh of clean energy per year, representing the power consumption of approximately 454 families."

The Flanders Expo opened in 1987 as a home for the annual Flanders Technology International, which had been held in Ghent since 1983. It also hosts a variety of fairs and has more than 1 million visitors annually, according to its website.
