Washington D.C. company sells first carbon neutral home in district

A leading Washington D.C. real estate company has announced the sale of the district's first ever "carbon neutral" home that ranks in the top one percent of the most energy efficient homes in the country.

According to Urban Pace, the energy efficient home is not a modern structure, but actually a very old pre-Civil War home located at 19 4th Street, NE that underwent a vigorous energy conservation-oriented makeover by local build firm Greenspur.

Among the changes made to the property during the renovations include the installation of an Owens Corning Energy Complete system, geothermal heating and cooling, Energy Star kitchen appliances, a tankless hot water system, and a Blueline Power energy management system.

According to its website, Blueline utilizes wind, biofuel, and solar energy systems to provide clean energy. For their solar energy program, Blueline utilizes a number of solar products from Unisolar to Sharp.
"This home was sold within 3 days of going on the market," said Kathy Brandel, Managing Broker for Urban Pace Fine Homes and the listing agent for the property. "The uniqueness of the renovation definitely sparked tremendous interest," said Brandel.

Because of the unique carbon neutral status of the renovated home, Greenspur held an open house to see the property last week.

We felt it was important to allow people to see how sustainable design elements can be incorporated into the 19th Century homes you find all over Washington," said Mark Turner, an employee for the company
