Retailer donates two solar powered electrical systems to Haiti relief efforts

In a display of how renewable green technologies can be used for good, a residential/office supplier has sent $100,000 of solar-powered lights to aid the rescue and recovery effort in Haiti.

Aaron's Inc. - which owns and operates more than 1,695 stores across the U.S. and Canada - announced last week through its community outreach program that it had sent two solar-powered electrical systems to Haiti.

Spencer Smith, a franchise owner of Aaron's who is heading the donation, said that those in Haiti who are beginning the rebuilding process would benefit from the solar energy systems because they have no electrical or gasoline sources to power other generators. Because of that many medical or rebuilding efforts are forced to scale back at night because there is no light.

"American companies and individuals have offered support to Haiti on a massive scale, and Aaron's is proud to be a part of that effort," said Ken Butler, Aaron's COO. "However, it was important that Aaron's not just write a check, but give in a way that would create immediate impact. With these generators, thousands will receive critical medical treatment that we hope will make a life-saving difference for many Haitians."

The two solar systems, which were designed by Sundance Solar Designs, will be able to provide enough energy to power two medical centers and 34 treatment tents.
