Advanced Energy awarded 5MW solar energy project in San Francisco

A Fort Collins, Colorado-based solar energy product manufacturer has been awarded a solar energy project that will include the creation of a solar energy system to power the San Francisco Sunset Reservoir.

Advanced Energy Industries, which specializes in the creation of technologies for "high-growth, thin-film manufacturing and solar-power generation," will create a solar power plant capable of generating 5 megawatts of solar energy that will power the reservoir.

The project will consist of 25,000 solar panels installed across 12 acres of land, which will make it one of the largest municipal solar energy projects in the country. The power plant will be owned and operated by the independent solar energy company Recurrent Energy, which developed the project in partnership with the San Francisco Public Utility Commission.

"We are proud to be selected by Recurrent Energy to collaborate with them on this landmark project. Advanced Energy's Solaron [photovoltaic] inverters have a strong reputation for optimized efficiency and the highest level of reliability for large-scale utilities," said Dr. Hans Betz, Advanced Energy's CEO. "The project demonstrates the City of San Francisco's commitment to renewable energy, and we are pleased to be able to help them achieve their goals."

Construction on the project will likely begin this winter and is expected to be completed by the year's end.
