Project Sunburst, which will be run by the Maryland Energy Administration, will offer rebates topping out at $1,000 for every kilowatt of solar energy that is created through photovoltaic solar panel constructions on public buildings.
The project is expected to create 100 jobs in the next year - and up to 750 new jobs by 2017 - while also working to get the state on track towards some of its renewable energy goals in the years to come.
"Maryland continues to lead by example through clean energy programs and incentives for all sectors, and Project Sunburst is yet another tangible step towards the realization of our Renewable Portfolio Standard goal of 20 percent renewable energy by 2022," O'Malley said. "I encourage all public entities to join with us today to go green and reduce government expenses by adding clean energy systems on our public buildings statewide."
Among the sites that are already being viewed as potential sites for Project Sunburst installations are the Port of Baltimore and the State Police Barracks.
