San Diego Diocese to enter into solar energy agreement with Perpetual Energy Systems

A number of solar energy companies have joined forces with the Diocese of San Jose to install and activate solar panels on their parishes and school that will generate 70 percent of each site's annual energy needs.

Perpetual Energy Systems will lead the solar power purchase agreement, which will include their installation of the solar energy systems with the help of MBL-Energy and Photon Energy Service as well as federal energy tax incentives for funding.

The five parish/school locations chosen by the diocese for the installations are Holy Spirit, Holy Family, Saint Christopher, Queen of Apostles, Saint Lucy as well as Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The systems will generate 1.4 million kilowatt hours of solar energy annually.

"The activation of the system is an outstanding achievement for our Diocese, our partners and our community as we continue the Catholic Green Initiative," said Bishop Patrick J. McGrath. "Thanks to the financing capabilities of PES and the efforts of Photon and MBL, the installation of these systems strengthens our goal of encouraging the Catholic community and all people of faith to examine how we use and share the earth’s resources."

Under the agreement, the diocese will enter into a 25-year PPA that will have it purchase the solar energy generated from the systems at a predetermined rate. PES will own and operate each of the installations
