Honeywell installs solar energy systems in Wilmington, Delaware

Honeywell International has announced that it is installing two solar energy systems in Wilmington, Delaware that were funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

The two projects - which were installed at the Porter Reservoir Filtration Plant and the Public Works Yard and Municipal Complex - will use approximately 3,400 solar panels and reduce electrical consumption in the town by 2.8 million kilowatt hours annually, or enough electricity to power more than 260 homes. The installations will also decrease carbon emissions in the city by almost 4.4 million pounds every year.

Honeywell added that the city would save approximately $1.14 million every year under the 20-year performance contract and could generate up to $16 million more in savings over the course of the contract.

"This program enables our city to move forward more rapidly with our environmental commitments, improve critical infrastructure and create jobs with no impact on our budget," said Wilmington Mayor James Baker. "Working with Honeywell, we were able to extend our stimulus funds and develop a comprehensive program that will reduce utility bills and carbon emissions, and benefit residents for years to come."

The two solar installations are part of a larger city-wide renewable energy program to decrease utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions from city-owned facilities and infrastructure.
