Detroit Edison receives approval for first solar energy contract

The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved an Engineer, Procure, and Construct contract from Detroit Edison to help further its SolarCurrents renewable energy program.

With the approval - which was passed down by the commission on Tuesday - now in hand, Detroit Edison will now be able to commission its own solar energy projects throughout the area it serves in Southeastern Michigan.

The first project announced by the company is a one-year, $18 million contract for Nova Consultants Inc. to analyze the feasibility, design, and start-up costs associated with installing up to 3 megawatts of photovoltaic solar systems in Edison- and customer-owned facilities.

"This contract will provide a number of new energy opportunities for our larger customers, as well as economic development benefits for the region as a whole," said Trevor Lauer, DTE Energy vice president, Retail Marketing. "We're interested in installing solar photovoltaic systems at businesses, educational institutions and non-profit organizations."

Nova will work with a series of other Michigan firms in order to undertake the project and complete the solar systems' installations. The engineering, environmental, and energy service company has previously taken on projects in the automotive, utility, and education markets in numerous areas across the country.
