The two parks, which will be located in Norfolk County, Ontario, will be owned and financed by North American solar energy service providers SunEdison and SkyPower, with the Ontario Power Authority purchasing power from the companies through terms in an agreed-upon contract.
"SunE Sky Norfolk represents an important milestone in Ontario's effort to create a world-leading market for green power and energy-efficient technologies," said Dave Levac, a Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and MPP. "Not only will increasing the province's renewable energy supply clean up our air and fight climate change, but it will further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels."
Together, both solar parks will generate close to 400 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy over the next two decades, or enough to power 33,000 homes annually. Additionally, the renewable energy will cut out over 250,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of removing nearly 60,000 cars off the road.
Dennis Travale, the county's mayor, added that the construction of the new solar energy parks would result in the creation of hundreds of new jobs for the area as well.
