Officials in Maryland eye stepped-up solar agenda

Posted 2 years ago in the Solar Policy category by Nate Lew
Maryland officials are currently working on legislation that could boost the amount of solar energy generated in the state over the coming years.

A report in the Baltimore Sun featured a plan pending before state lawmakers that would require energy companies to increase the amount of solar energy they derive their electricity from in the coming years.

The newspaper said that the proposal is strongly supported by Governor Martin O'Malley, but is apparently generating a debate among House of Delegates members after already making its way through the state senate.

The Sun added that current state law requires companies to derive 2 percent of their electricity from solar sources by 2022, and that under the new proposal, companies would be required to still meet that goal while making quicker progress toward it in the next several years. Many other states have laid out their own renewable energy goals for the coming years.

Regardless of whether the plan is approved, it can also serve as a reminder that solar energy can be generated in states like Maryland, which, unlike the American Southwest, are not widely known for their sunlight and hot weather.
