Various media outlets noted recently that Chromasun, which specializes in solar-powered air conditioners, had received a $3 million venture capital investment to establish its products in the market.
The company's website reports that its air conditioners are mounted on rooftops and use solar thermal technology to provide cooling by powering absorption chillers.
Chromasun also notes on its website that the technology did see some use in the 1980s, and that its air conditioners would be especially effective on hot days, when demand for electricity tends to be at its highest anyhow.
The widespread adoption of solar power for air conditioning could provide substantial environmental benefits in the coming years considering how much electricity in the U.S. is used for cooling, especially in regions such as the Southwest and Deep South.
A growing number of people have also been investing in solar-powered water heaters, which can be an affordable way to support clean energy without having to buy a full photovoltaic array.
