One of North Carolina's leading energy companies has announced the acquisition of a new solar energy project that will be developed in the city of Shelby.

According to Duke Energy, one of its commercial business units has acquired a photovoltaic project whose electricity will be distributed by North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number 1 (NCMPA1), as well as its 19 member organizations.

The photovoltaic array can generate a megawatt of electricity, sufficient to power hundreds of local homes. NCMPA will buy the electricity from the facility under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Duke Energy, and it will also receive all renewable energy credits associated with the project.

"This project demonstrates that Shelby is committed to renewable energy and to attract like-minded businesses and industry. It is a boost to the economic development of our community," said Ted Alexander, the mayor of Shelby.

Duke noted that the photovoltaic array will be constructed on a 10-acre parcel of city-owned land not far from the region's airport. The project was acquired from SunPower Corp, a prominent manufacturer of solar cells, panels and other related products.
