Couple heads to court over solar panels

Couple heads to court over solar panels

Posted 2 years ago in the Solar Policy category by Danny Vo
The growing popularity of solar energy upgrades around the country has occasionally resulted in legal disputes that in some cases could set important long-term precedents.

One typical source of legal friction over the placement of solar panels would involve a person and their homeowner association or some comparable body. Such disputes commonly focus on aesthetics, such as whether the panels should be visible from the street and whether they detract from an area's overall scenic quality.

A recent article in the Detroit Free Press featured a couple from Canton, Michigan who had taken legal action against their homeowners association for the right to install solar panels. The association had reportedly found solar panels to be "aesthetically incompatible" with the surrounding homes.

According to the newspaper, a settlement was reached in the case where the couple will be able to install three solar panels, which will help them significantly reduce their utility costs in the coming months.

More homeowners are finding solar panels to be a realistic and affordable option that helps save money over time.
