According to SunEdison, it plans to develop a total of 12 solar energy plants in Italy's province of Lecce, each of which will be able to generate 1 megawatt of electricity. The company reports that in 2009, it delivered more kilowatt-hours of energy than any other solar services provider in North America.
"Given our financing capabilities and project skills, SunEdison plans to continue to expand rapidly in Italy and in our other targeted growth areas in the United States, Canada and other European countries," said SunEdison President Carlos Domenech.
To develop these projects, SunEdison announced that it had also reached a financing deal for 47 million euros with a German bank.
Of the 12 solar arrays, SunEdison noted that seven are already operational and sold power during the first quarter of 2010. The other five facilities are expected to be finished by the third quarter of the year. SunEdison has also announced that it is working on a 72 megawatt photovoltaic plant in Italy that would be the largest of its kind in Europe.
