With this in mind, the New York Times recently reported on a project underway in the city where a twin-engine plane is making early-morning flyovers in the city to take laser photographs that can be used to determine, among other things, the best locations for solar power generation.
The newspaper added that project will result in highly detailed three-dimensional images of the city that will take factors such as elevation, sunlight and structures into account. One result of this project could be a new "solar map" of New York City.
Solar maps have been developed for a handful of other U.S. cities and can be highly useful for local utilities trying to make the most of solar distribution projects or which are trying to comply with state renewable energy mandates.
By seeking to generate more electricity in large cities and on top of existing structures, companies can often save considerably on regulatory and land acquisition costs, among other expenses.
