Custom-Bilt Metals announced that it had worked with Unique Concepts, Inc. to develop the 5.7 kilowatt solar energy array, which is integrated with the structure's seam metal roofing.
The building in question, St. Bartholomew's Chapel, is located on the Rincon Reservation in Valley Center. The only part of the original structure to survive the wildfire was reported to be the bell tower. Despite the historic loss, this provided an opportunity to work new and greener technologies into the rebuilt structure.
"Given the temperature extremes and potential severe wind and weather events of the Escondido Valley region, the durable thin-film laminate solution adhered to standing seam metal roofing is the best option because of its tested ability to withstand winds of up to 160 miles per hour," said Tony Chiovare, CEO of Custom-Bilt Metals, "The FusionSolar thin-film laminate technology achieves a higher relative efficiency under high temperatures and low light than solar glass for year-round power generation."
The new 3,356 square foot structure holds 140 people and uses other energy efficient features such as cement that uses earth from the reservation. The new structure also holds more than twice as many people as before, with added features such as improved parking.
