According to the International Energy Outlook 2010 released by the Energy Information Administration, global marketed energy consumption is expected to rise 49 percent between 2007 and 2035.
"Renewables are the fastest-growing source of world energy supply, but fossil fuels are still set to meet more than three-fourths of total energy needs in 2035 assuming current policies are unchanged," said EIA Administrator Richard Newell.
Along with major solar energy and wind projects, new technologies that promote energy efficiency will also be useful in helping to meet future demand.
The report noted that China and India will especially see their energy demand rise in the coming years as their economies continue to grow. In fact, by 2035 these two countries are expected to account for about 30 percent of world energy use, compared to 20 percent in 2007.
Meanwhile, the U.S. share of world energy consumption is expected to fall from 21 percent in 2007 to 16 percent in 2035.
