Green jobs may take on a new angle in the coming years, with production now getting underway on a couple of high-profile electric vehicle brands, including from General Motors and Nissan.
Elsewhere, a recent report from the group Environment North Carolina says that the solar energy industry could yield at least 28,000 jobs in that state alone in the coming years with favorable policies in place.
"Everyone knows solar energy is clean. There has never been a solar spill," said Elizabeth Ouzts, state director of Environment North Carolina. "The sun is abundant and free in North Carolina. That's why capturing it can create tens of thousands of jobs right here that can't be outsourced."
According to the organization, if the state can commit to deriving 14 percent of its electricity by 2030, it could drive $2.5 billion in total gross investment each year while also creating decently paying jobs. The group also cited a number of companies already in North Carolina that are working on the next generation of solar power technologies.
