California working on nation's largest solar plant

Posted 2 years ago in the Solar Energy category by Danny Vo
The solar energy industry has made dramatic gains in California in recent years, and it will continue to do so as new and increasingly large projects come online.

In fact, the state may become the home of a solar array that could generate up to 850 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power thousands of homes in Southern California.

In a recent announcement, S&C Electric Company reported that it had signed a contract to provide engineering services for the project. The array is being developed by Tessera Solar and Mortenson Construction.

Along with being one of the largest solar plants on earth, people may also be interested to learn that this project will use a technology that may be unfamiliar to some. The project is expected to use SunCatcher solar dishes from Stirling.

These dishes concentrate sunlight onto a motor that becomes superheated and uses expanding hydrogen to power turbines. However, the project could still be delayed by disputes over its location, with environmentalist maintaining that sensitive wildlife habitats could be destroyed.
