SunPower completes North Carolina solar project

Posted 2 years ago in the Solar Business category by Nate Lew
Solar energy continues to make substantial inroads in North Carolina, with the completion of another photovoltaic project announced this week in the state.

According to SunPower Corp., it has finished work on the Shelby Solar Project, which is a 1 megawatt facility that will generate enough electricity to power about 140 homes each year. The power will be purchased over the next 20 years by North Carolina Municipal Power Agency Number 1, which serves the Shelby area.

"Solar power complements our existing power supply portfolio by providing peak power during the daylight hours, while also helping to maintain our very small carbon footprint," said Graham Edwards, the CEO of ElectriCities, which provides management services for the power agency.

This particular solar plant is located on 10 acres of land and will allow the power agency to receive all renewable energy credits that are associated with it.

One noteworthy thing about this photovoltaic array is that it uses SunPower sun-tracking technology to let the panels move with the sun through the day. This improves sun capture by as much as 25 percent, notes SunPower, while also reducing the amount of land needed for such projects.
