According to Suntech Power Holdings, the UK's Microgeneration Certification Scheme recently certified its most popular models, which sets the stage for the panels to be sold in that country. The certification process includes a factory inspection, performance evaluation and other things.
"With a high degree of home ownership and a positive feed-in-tariff legislation, which offers secure returns, we are confident that the UK market offers great potential," said Suntech executive Jerry Stokes.
The fact that the solar market is expanding in the UK and other parts of the world not particularly known for sunlight can be traced largely to the growing efficiency of solar panels and other clean energy technologies.
Other European countries, such as Spain and Germany, have been world leaders in solar energy production. However, there is concern that recent cutbacks in solar subsidies in those countries could be a setback for the clean energy sector.
