From elementary schools to universities, educational institutions around the country have been increasingly looking to solar energy as a way to save money while improving the environment.

The latest such example comes from Ohio, where Youngstown State University recently announced that it plans a 10,000 square foot solar roof array on one of its buildings.

"YSU is once again proving to our state and our nation that innovation, job creation, and energy
independence can happen right here in our own community. With the right federal and state
investments, our cutting-edge companies and innovative public-private partnerships can
strengthen Ohio's role as a national leader clean energy," said U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown in the announcement.

When complete later this year, the installation will be among the largest of its kind in Northeast Ohio. The solar panels will also be installed in conjunction with other energy upgrades on the campus, including upgraded insulation and more efficient lighting.

In total, the university's combined energy efforts are aimed at reducing campus use by 20 percent while saving $500,000 on lighting bills alone. Over the next decade, the planned energy upgrades are expected to save the university $13 million.
