PulteGroup, one of the nation's largest homebuilding companies, reported this week that consumers have been very interested in new homes that come with solar power equipment already installed. According to the company, installing solar in a new home can cost 20 percent less than retrofitting an existing home with photovoltaic panels.
"Solar makes sense for many homebuyers," said Walter Cuculic, the company's Director of Sustainability, "With solar more affordable than ever before, tax credits available for purchasing solar options, and the ability to roll the cost into a home mortgage, solar is a great investment for new homebuyers looking to hedge against rising energy costs."
The company added that it has 10 communities that actively offer solar power as an option. Many of these homes are in Arizona, California or Nevada, all of which have been among the nation's leaders in solar energy production.
According to Cuculic though, the company is currently looking to expand its operations elsewhere in the nation. Some states under consideration reportedly include New Jersey, Colorado, Florida and South Carolina.
