The company reports that the first eight megawatts of solar panels located at its Copper Mountain solar facility have been installed and are already delivering energy to the power grid. The full photovoltaic project, when complete, is expected to provide 48 megawatts of electricity - sufficient to power thousands of average homes.
"We are pleased to reach this major milestone so quickly, and we look forward to completing the project later this year," said Jeffrey W. Martin, CEO of Sempra Generation. "Copper Mountain Solar is delivering a new supply of clean, renewable power to California residents, while creating hundreds of construction jobs."
The project is expected to be fully operational later this year, with construction having started in January. About 300 construction jobs will be generated for the project, along with four long-term ones.
Sempra Generation also runs a nearby 10-megawatt solar plant known as El Dorado, with power from both facilities being sold to Pacific Gas & Electric. In total, the two facilities will use nearly 1 million photovoltaic panels.
