NRG acquires new projects in Southwest

Posted 1 year ago in the Solar Business category by Danny Vo
NRG Energy, a New Jersey company, has announced that it will acquire a portfolio of solar energy projects in various locations in Arizona and California.

The nine projects acquired under the deal range in size from 20 megawatts to 99 megawatts, with many set to come on line between 2011 and 2013. With these new facilities, NRG Solar would have about 1,150 megawatts in projects under development.

"Acquiring the nine development projects will be instrumental in expanding our clean energy portfolio and further establishing NRG's leadership as a solar generation company," said Tom Doyle, president of NRG Solar. "This agreement adds meaningful depth to NRG Solar's development pipeline of strong solar projects that can compete well against other solar projects on efficiency, cost of power and return on investment."

The company noted that it already operates the largest photovoltaic solar project in California, which is a 21 megawatt facility in Blythe. It is also involved in other clean energy technologies, such as wind and biomass.

A number of other projects are also under development in California and Arizona as companies work to take advantage of government incentives and tax credits, as well as the region's ample sunlight.
