According to the utility, it has received the Southeastern Electric Exchange's highest honor for outstanding performance in recognition of the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center. The award is given each year to the "best of the best" of all entrants considered across 11 different awards categories.
"I'm extremely pleased that our development and construction teams have been recognized for their dedication to making the nation's largest solar photovoltaic plant a reality," said FPL Senior Director of Project Development Buck Martinez. "This plant is bringing significant economic and environmental benefits to Florida and making the Sunshine State a national leader in solar power."
The utility added that the plant had been completed more than $22 million under budget. The facility uses over 90,000 photovoltaic panels to generate enough electricity to power more than 3,000 average homes.
The massive Florida solar array will also offset carbon emissions equivalent to removing 4,500 cars from the road every year.
