Company set to start producing new solar cells

Posted 1 year ago in the Solar Business category by Nate Lew
The future of solar energy is likely to be filled with increasingly thin and flexible photovoltaic materials that will make it easier than ever to generate clean electricity.

Earlier this year, Micron Technology and Australia's Origin Energy Limited announced they were teaming up for a 50-50 joint venture that would focus on the development of photovoltaic technology. That endeavor is now known as Transform Solar.

"As we have looked to leverage our core strengths in other markets, photovoltaic energy technology is a natural area of investigation. Origin is a company with a significant interest and history in renewable energy technologies. Combining our semiconductor manufacturing expertise with Origin's solar experience could result in a strong partnership," said Mark Durcan, chief operating officer of Micron, at the time.

Now, a report in the Idaho Statesman says that Transform Solar will bring its Sliver brand of solar cells to some segments of the market starting in 2011.

The newspaper added that the solar cells will be manufactured at a former Micron semiconductor plant in Boise, and assembled into solar panels at another Micron-owned plant in Nampa, with some 70 employees having already been hired.
