New solar array part of larger planned project

New solar array part of larger planned project

A new solar energy array has gone online in California as part of a broader initiative aimed at eventually generating as much as 500 megawatts of electricity.

According to Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the Vaca-Dixon Solar Station is the flagship project of the initiative. This particular array provides 2 megawatts of solar energy. Under the current plan, PG&E will develop up to 250 megawatts of new solar resources in California, while independent providers will provide a similar amount.

"These types of smaller-scale projects help the state meet its clean energy goals in much less time than projects that are larger in size," said Michael Peevey, president of the California Public Utilities Commission.

Elsewhere, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger praised the project as helping to keep "California on the leading edge of this booming industry."

When this project is complete, it is expected to provide enough clean energy to power about 150,000 average homes. The project will also help develop the number of green jobs generated in California while helping the state meet its ambitious renewable energy goals.
