University showing support for solar energy

Posted 1 year ago in the Solar Energy category by Nate Lew
Educational institutions around the country have been finding more and more ways to show their support for solar energy and other environmentally friendly practices.

For example, a report in the Chicago Tribune noted that the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in Cedar Falls recently became one of the latest schools to establish a solar energy array. In this case, the university is reportedly installing 900 photovoltaic panels that will power a new parking garage.

However, this isn't the university's only foray into the world of solar energy. Last month, it also took third place in the World Championship Intercollegiate Solar Boating competition, which was held in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

According to a university announcement, the top two finishers in the event were the New Orleans College of Naval Engineering and the University of Southampton in England. UNI noted that its team also won a trophy in the Outstanding Solar Design category, as well as fourth-place ranking in the technical report category.

The university, which has finished in the top five of the event for four years running, also plans to host the 2011 solar boating world championship at a nearby state park and on its own campus.
