In an announcement this week, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) reported that it had approved renewable energy contracts for two of the state's leading utilities.
Under one contract, Southern California Edison has agreed to a 20-year power purchase agreement with CA Solar 10, LLC for energy from a project that will eventually be capable of generating 484 megawatts of solar energy. This particular project is said to have been fast-tracked by the Bureau of Land Management and is expected to be providing energy by 2014.
Also, San Diego Gas and Electric Company has been approved for a contract with Calpine Energy Services to purchase 212 gigawatt hours of geothermal energy per year through 2014.
Last month, the CPUC announced the approval of a 20-year power purchase agreement where San Diego Gas and Electric will buy clean energy from the 40-megawatt Alta Mesa Wind Project, located near Palm Springs.
