According to an announcement from the laboratory, Research & Development Magazine listed two technologies among this year's most significant innovations. The awards are said to be known in the research and development community as the "Oscars of Innovation."
One of the technologies is said to be a "black silicon" etching technology that improves the efficiency of photovoltaic wafers by reducing light that is reflected and wasted. The anti-reflection process reportedly absorbs 98 percent of solar radiation.
Also being honored was the Amonix 7700 Solar Power Generator, which is said to be a 53-kilowatt photovoltaic power generator that can produce 40 percent more energy than traditional solar panels.
"The large number of winners from the Department of Energys national labs every year is a clear sign that our labs are doing some of the most innovative research in the world. This work benefits us all by enhancing Americas competitiveness, ensuring our security, providing new energy solutions, and expanding the frontiers of our knowledge," said Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
