According to the company, its new Solion product was presented at the Intersolar US event this month in San Francisco. The Solion is said to be based on the already established VIIsta family of manufacturing tools.
Varian adds that its latest product is aimed at increasing the efficiency of solar cells while lowering costs and streamlining the manufacturing process with its proprietary Precision Patterned Implant technology.
"A major part of our corporate growth strategy is to expand our implant technology leadership into adjacent markets where we can bring highly differentiated value to our customers," said Gary Dickerson, CEO of Varian Semiconductor. "We have worked with customers to validate an improvement in cell efficiency and a reduction in process steps using ion implant in the solar manufacturing process."
Industry-wide, this is just one company that is implementing new and increasingly sophisticated technologies with an eye on eventually helping the cost of solar energy reach parity with that of traditional fossil fuels.
