According to Green Mountain Power, a Vermont Utility company, it is working on what will become a solar array consisting of 770 photovoltaic arrays located on a "solar orchard" spread across three-quarters of an acre of land.
"This project is an important part of our overall energy and climate strategy to increase the amount of renewable energy generation in our state. It brings us very close to our goal to have 10,000 solar panels installed in our service territory within 1,000 days - a commitment we made in November 2008," said Green Mountain Power CEO Mary Powell.
The 1,400-acre Shelburne Farms is a working nonprofit farm and environmental education center that is also listed as a National Historic Landmark.
One further environmental benefit of this project may be that it will help demonstrate that even historic sites can benefit from renewable energy upgrades like solar panels without having to compromise their original and distinctive character.
