Private D.C. school goes solar with 120 panels

The Sidwell Friends School, a private, Quaker school located in northwest Washington, D.C., is going solar.

Sidwell has some famous alumni and current students: Chelsea Clinton attended when her father Bill was president, and Sasha and Malia Obama - the current president's two daughters - are currently enrolled.

A Vermont company is responsible for Sidwell's solar power installation, the Vermont Press Bureau reports July 30. White River Junction-based groSolar will install the 120 panels at the school - and, uniquely, the solar project is being paid for with bonds purchased by members of the school community.

Bonds worth $5,000 are being issued to fund the solar array under a program arranged by a D.C. nonprofit, Common Cents Solar. Sidwell will pay the bondholders for the power the solar installation generates; when the project is fully paid off, it will be donated to the school.

"Members of the community, the ones who are buying into this project," can get a federal solar tax credit - even though the school, as a nonprofit, wouldn't be eligible, Common Cents Solar co-founder Ketch Ryan said to the news service.ADNFCR-2111-ID-19915176-ADNFCR
