The New York City-based development firm, Solaire Generation, specializes in the design and assembly of solar arrays for parking lots. Parking facilities are nearly ideal for solar installations: Not only are they flat and open, but lot-mounted panels can help shade parked cars from the sun and keep them cool.
The project that Solaire Generation is building in New Jersey will certainly keep a lot of cars shaded: It will cover about 1,350 parking spaces and comprise more than 11,000 panels. In total, it will produce enough energy in a year to power 320 average homes.
"We're thrilled to be part of such an important, large-scale project," Solaire Generation CEO Laurence Mackler enthused. "The solar potential of commercial parking lots is enormous."
The Fortune 100 firm with which Solaire Generation contracted remains unnamed. Like many companies, though, it has determined that a solar investment makes sense for the long-term - particularly if fossil-fuel costs rise in the coming years.
