Department store chain highlights solar energy investments

Kohl's Department Stores highlighted its green credentials this week by announcing that it has now installed solar panels at 100 of its locations across the country.

According to the retail company, the 100th solar array is located at its store in Mays Landing, New Jersey. Other photovoltaic arrays are located in states ranging from California and Colorado to Maryland, Wisconsin and Oregon.

One thing that homeowners can take note of from this wide range of locations is that they don't necessarily have to live in a hot or sunny climate in order to start enjoying the financial and environmental benefits of solar energy.

"Our 100 solar locations, commitment to build 73 Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified locations and 500 ENERGY STAR stores demonstrate our ongoing commitment to sustainability with meaningful results. We will continue to strive toward advancing environmental solutions that will lead to a cleaner, healthier environment for our communities," said Ken Bonning, a Kohl's executive vice president.

In fact, the combination of solar energy and other energy management efforts have reportedly helped Kohl's save $50 million on electricity in recent years.
