University of Colorado continues getting greener

Students at the University of Colorado at Boulder are heading back to class this semester on a campus that is even greener than ever.

According to an announcement from the university, an additional 370 solar panels have been added to the university's existing array, which will generate enough energy to power about 20 medium-sized houses.

The panels reportedly measure about 6 by 3 feet and are located on the roof of the university's Center for Innovation and Creativity. With the addition of these new panels, the building now generates about 10 percent of its total electrical needs from solar resources. Other buildings on the campus boast hundreds of other solar panels, noted the announcement.

Moe Tabrizi, the university's energy conservation officer reported in the announcement that the deal under which the panels were installed will allow them to be purchased "at a fraction of their original cost."

Looking ahead, the university also intends to install another 100 kilowatts of solar panels on its new Williams North residence hall next year. This effort is consistent with numerous other educational institutions and school districts around the country that have enjoyed the environmental and financial benefits of solar energy.
