Solar power becoming more widespread in NFL

A recent announcement from the New York Jets indicates that the NFL team is going green - and it's got nothing to do with the color of their uniforms.

According to the football team, it has completed a new solar energy array at its headquarters and training center in Florham Park, New Jersey. The 3,000 photovoltaic panels used in the project were provided by Chinese company Yingli Solar.

The team added that this solar array is now the largest of its kind at any NFL team's headquarters. The electricity generated is set to be sold to the team under a long-term power purchase agreement.

"This project is the first of many green initiatives on behalf of the team, and we are proud to be green in color and also in deed. We chose the right partners and are thrilled about what this installation will do for our organization, our community, and hopefully for inspiring the entire league," said Thad Sheely, executive vice president of finance and stadium development for the team.

The Jets' solar array is expected to generate about 750,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year while offsetting about 540 metric tons of carbon emissions each year.
