IKEA to widen solar use

IKEA to widen solar use

Posted 1 year ago in the Solar Energy category by Nate Lew
Seven IKEA stores and one distribution center in California will see solar panels installed on their roofs, with construction possibly beginning as early as late fall.

Once government permits are issued, almost 20,000 panels total will generate a total of 4.5 megawatts. That amount is enough to supply yearly electricity to 580 homes. The solar array will prevent emissions equivalent to those generated by 914 cars and stop the emission of 5,268 tons of carbon dioxide into the skies over California.

The move comes after IKEA announced intentions to have geothermal heating at a Colorado store.

The California stores that will take on solar panels are East Palo Alto, Emeryville, West Sacramento, Burbank, Costa Mesa Covina and San Diego. The distribution center in Tejon will stand as one of the U.S.' largest commercial rooftops equipped with solar paneling. Two-point-eight million kilowatts of energy will be generated by 216,000 square feet of solar paneling.

IKEA recently finished outfitting its Tempe, Arizona store with solar panels. Stores already equipped with the panels are in Brooklyn, New York; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Charlotte, North Carolina; Draper, Utah; and Orlando and Tampa, Florida.
