Florida inmates approaching their release dates are getting an opportunity at a second chance that can put them directly on the forefront of the green technology industry, according to the International Business Times.
The Department of Justice awarded a $740,000 grant that the Florida Department of Corrections will use to open a program to produce certified solar panel installers. The program, part of the Second Chance Act Technology Careers Training Demonstration Projects for Incarcerated Adults, will begin in the Palm Beach County jail.
The Sago Palm Work Camp assist inmates nearing release with a successful re-entry into society. The facilities houses inmates who have less than three years remaining on their prison terms.
Among the coursework is a nine-month 1,200 hour Electrical Technology Career and Technical Education component. Partnering with the program is a technical center in the Palm Beach area that will provide Solar Training that will enable participants to earning a North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners certificate.
The program aims to build on the inmates' educational and vocational skills and credentials so, once they complete serving their debt to society, they will be better equipped to win employment opportunities and hold on to them.
